HC Deb 09 February 1922 vol 150 cc331-2W
Rear-Admiral ADAIR

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether any sum has been taken in next year's Estimates for an allowance to married naval officers in supplement of their ordinary rates of pay; and, if not, whether a reason can be given for not giving effect to the recommendation of Admiral Jerram's Committee on this point?

Sir B. FALLE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty if he can make any statement on the subject of marriage allowance to naval officers, and hold out any hope of a speedy settlement of this question?

Mr. AMERY

It has been decided that owing to the financial situation the provision for marriage allowance to naval officers, which was included in the Sketch Estimates for 1922–23, will have to be omitted. As regards the second part of the question of the hon. and gallant Member for the Shettleston Division (Rear-Admiral Adair), I would point out that the Halsey Committee on the pay of naval officers, to which he no doubt refers, did not recommend marriage allowance.
