HC Deb 03 April 1919 vol 114 cc1423-4W
Sir WATSON CHEYNE

asked the Secretary of State for War how many soldiers have been discharged from the Army on account of pulmonary tuberculosis since 4th August, 1914; how many soldiers who have been discharged from, the Army are at present receiving treatment in sanatoria; and how many are on the waiting list for such treatment?

Major ASTOR

I have been asked to reply. The number of men discharged from the Service since 4th August, 1914, on account of pulmonary tuberculosis cannot be precisely determined from the records of the Pensions Ministry, but it is estimated at 25,000. I am unable to say how many of these were considered suitable for institutional treatment or did actually undergo such treatment. The number undergoing residential treatment in sanatoria and hospitals on 1st March, 1919, was approximately 3,150, and the number on the waiting list was 470.
