WHITEasked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he will state the quantity of sugar allocated to Ireland anal to Great Britain, respectively; who is responsible for its allocation; whether he is-aware that dissatisfaction exists both in consequence of the shortage in Ireland and its unequal mode of distribution therein; and whether he will appoint an independent authority to safeguard the interests of Ireland and control the proper distribution of sugar in that country?
Captain BATHURSTThe Royal Commission on the Sugar Supply are responsible for the distribution of sugar in Ireland. This is based upon purchases made by wholesale dealers and other wholesale buyers in 1915, and the same principles are followed in Ireland as in other parts of the United Kingdom. The Food Controller, as I have already intimated, has lately become Chairman of the Commission, and he is sending an inspector to Ireland to report to him upon the sugar distribution in certain districts there. I am not yet in a position to indicate precisely the steps which it may be necessary to take to meet the difficulties referred to, but I shall be glad to consider any further representations from the hon. Member on the subject.
