HC Deb 09 November 1916 vol 87 c428W
Mr. S. BENN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many young men of military age have been appointed surveyors of taxes during the past twelve months; and how many of them are now marked indispensable?

Mr. McKENNA

The number of appointments of men of military age to posts as surveyors and assistant-surveyors of taxes during the period mentioned comprises 194 previously in the employment of the Board of Inland Revenue, 84 previously in the employment of other public departments, and 73 selected from outside sources who were considered specially suitable by reason of their previous experience,e.g., in law or accountancy. The average age of these men was just on thirty. These appointments were rendered necessary by the vast addition to the work of the Department arising out of the War Budgets approved by this House.
