HC Deb 09 March 1916 vol 80 cc1730-1W
137. Mr. HOGGE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that, in spite of his own statement in the House of Commons that Mr. A. Ross's case was clearly one for non-combatant service, he has been compelled against his will and under protest to become a private in the 3/1st Herefordshire Regiment, C Company, and that he was informed on showing the OFFICIAL REPORT that it made no difference; and whether he will say who is responsible for flouting the decision of the Secretary of State for War?

Mr. TENNANT

I did not state that A. Boss's case was clearly one for non-combatant service; what I stated was that if the facts were as stated it appeared to be a case where the man should be transferred to a non-combatant branch of the Service. My answer in this House could obviously not be a substitute for a detailed examination into the facts. I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for West Leeds on the 23rd February, A. Ross, who voluntarily attested, should put forward his case through his commanding officer.
