HC Deb 04 March 1915 vol 70 c989W
Mr. HORNER

asked whether the Commissioners of National Education in Ireland have yet come to any decision and, if so, what decision as regards the abolition of the system of merit marks known as excellent, very good, good, fair, middling, bad, etc., made use of by inspectors of schools in appraising the character of teachers and their work?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Commissioners of National Education intend to discontinue the present system of assigning merit marks in the case of ordinary national schools, and a circular on the subject will shortly be issued to managers, teachers and inspectors.
