HC Deb 20 June 1912 vol 39 c1980W
Sir HILDRED CARLILE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that there are about 10,000 teachers in elementary schools who, under the impression that they would have to pay contributions and continue to teach until they were sixty-five years of age, did not accept the teachers' superannuation scheme of 1898, and whether he can say what steps the Government proposes to take to enable these teachers to obtain pensions under that scheme or a new one?

Mr. J. A. PEASE

My right hon. Friend has asked me to answer this question. I am aware that, approximately, 10,000 teachers in elementary schools did not exercise their option of accepting the Elementary School Teachers (Superannuation) Act, 1898, but I have no information as to their reason for not doing so. I propose to appoint a Departmental Committee to advise me to what extent the money at my disposal will enable me to make provision for the purpose, amongst others, of affording to these teachers another opportunity of accepting the Act.
