HC Deb 27 February 1911 vol 22 c170W
Mr. KELLAWAY

asked the Secretary of State for War how many of the 264 commissions from the ranks during the past five years were honorary as distinguished from full commissions; and what is the meaning of the word "honorary" in a military sense?

Mr. HALDANE

All these commissions were commissions in the full acceptance of the term. Two hundred were granted for quarter-masters and riding-masters, who were given honorary rank under the Royal Warrant for Pay, etc., as their form of commission confers no rankper se. Honorary rank may be taken to mean rank which is not executive, but which confers the advantages of precedence, etc., referred to in paragraph 229 of the King's Regulations.
