HC Deb 13 February 1911 vol 21 c823W
Mr. LONSDALE

asked the Chief Secretary whether he intends to take any steps this Session towards making effective provision for the better heating and cleansing of national schools in Ireland?

Mr. BIRRELL

I am still hopeful of being able to do something in the matter this Session.

Mr. LONSDALE

asked the Chief Secretary whether he had received representations from National School teachers' organisations in Ireland as to the necessity for increased powers to local authorities to enforce compulsory attendance at national schools; and whether he intends to propose legislation on the subject this Session?

Mr. BIRRELL

Representations to the effect mentioned in the question have been received from National School teachers' organisations in Ireland, but, as I have already stated, I am by no means convinced that it would be expedient at present to extend the provisions for compulsory attendance at schools in Ireland.
