HC Deb 13 February 1911 vol 21 cc822-3W
Mr. CRUMLEY

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland what steps, if any, have been taken by the Estates Commissioners to have John M'Manus, son of an evicted tenant, restored to the farm from which his father was evicted, or to provide him with a farm of equivalent value?

Mr. BIRRELL

The hon. Member probably refers to the case of John D. M'Manus, of Cavanreagh, Blacklion, who applied for reinstatement in a holding from which he stated his father was evicted and which is at present in the possession of another tenant. The Estates Commissioners have inquired into and considered this application, and have decided to take no action in the matter.

Mr. GUINEY

asked the Chief Secretary if he will ascertain from the Estates Commissioners the cause of delay in reinstating an evicted tenant, named Daniel O'Driscoll, on the estate of Dr. John Leader, county Cork, whose application has been favourably considered, and who was so notified on 17th January, 1908?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Estates Commissioners inform me that O'Driscoll's former holding is in the occupation of another tenant who is now the owner of the lands, and the Commissioners have noted O'Driscoll's name for consideration in the allotment of such untenanted land as they may be able to acquire for distribution.

Mr. GUINEY

asked the Chief Secretary why the Estates Commissioners have not carried out the promise contained in their letter dated 30th December, 1907, E 36,299/7, and addressed to Mr. Edward Bennett, an evicted tenant on the Stubbs estate, county Cork, stating that his claim was considered bonâ fide, and that he would be provided with a holding?

Mr. BIRRELL

In the letter to which the hon. Member refers Mr. Bennett was informed that his name had been placed on the list of persons whom the Estates Commissioners deemed suitable to be provided with holdings should an opportunity occur, and his application will be considered in the allotment of such untenanted land as the Commissioners may acquire for distribution.
