HC Deb 04 April 1911 vol 23 c2174W
MARQUESS of TULLIBARDINE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture what is, roughly, the average weight of good oats, pounds to the bushel, grown in England and Scotland respectively; and what is the average weight of good Russian oats imported into this country?

Sir E. STRACHEY

The average weight of a bushel of oats during the past five years has been 39.7 lbs. in England, and 40.4 lbs. in Scotland, according to the estimates made by the Board's Crop Reporters. With regard to Russian oats, no official estimates are available, but I am informed that a fair average sample of Russian oats weighed 40 lbs. a bushel, but that good oats can be had at 35 lbs. up to the best quality at 48 lbs. a bushel. They are usually sold on the market at either 38 or 40 lbs.
