HC Deb 05 April 1910 vol 16 cc391-2W
Mr. KERR-SMILEY

asked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware, that a number of people in the Portballintrae district earn their livelihood by fishing, and that they are handicapped by reason of the want of proper harbour accommodation; whether an inspector of the Department of Agriculture inquired into the condition of the harbour some years ago; and, if so, what were the recommendations he then made; and is the Government prepared to take any steps to remove the grievance of which the fishermen complain?

Mr. REDMOND BARRY

Portballintrae has been inspected, but the construction of any useful work at such an exposed place would involve so large an expenditure that it is doubtful whether the county council could see its way to provide a reasonable proportion thereof. In any case it would be quite beyond the power of the Department in the present state of their funds to entertain the question of making a substantial contribution.
