HC Deb 21 September 1909 vol 11 cc387-8W
Mr. THOMAS O'DONNELL

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland how many intermediate students presented themselves for honours in the two divisions of the modern literary course in each of the three grades in the year 1909; how many obtained exhibitions in each of those divisions in the three grades; on what principle are the exhibitions divided; and what is the cause of the preference given to German as against Irish?

Mr. CHERRY

I am informed by the Commissioners of Intermediate Education that the number of students presented for honours in the first division of the modern literary course was 1,105, namely, 640 in the junior grade, 353 in the middle grade, and 112 in the senior grade, and that 44 exhibitions were awarded, 10 in the junior, 27 in the middle, and 7 in the senior grade. In the second division 576 students were presented for honours, namely, 322 in the junior grade, 182 in the middle grade, and 72 in the senior grade, and 49 exhibitions were awarded, namely, 28 in the junior grade, 13 in the middle grade, and 8 in the senior grade. The exhibitions assigned to the modern literary course are allotted equally between the two divisions, provided there is a sufficient number of students in each division eligible for exhibitions.
