HC Deb 04 November 1909 vol 12 c2147W
Mr. DELANY

asked the Chief Secretary whether he can state what arrangement has been come to with reference to the turbary rights of the tenants on the Digby estate, Geashill, King's County, which is at present before the Estates Commissioners for sale to the tenants; can he say if trustees have been appointed over the bogs, and, if so, by whom; and whether, if it is found that trustees have been nominated without the approval of the majority of the tenantry, an opportunity will be given to the occupiers to choose their own trustees?

Mr. BIRRELL

The Estates Commissioners understand that the owner proposes to sell the bogs to trustees. The purchase agreements signed by the tenants for the purchase of their holdings were not lodged until August, 1908, and the estate has not yet been dealt with. The Commissioners cannot, therefore, say whether the trustees have been appointed, but if it is proposed to sell to them under Section 4 of the Irish Land Act, 1903, their names will be submitted for the approval of the Commissioners, who will consider any representations of the tenants on the subject. The matter is not one which can be dealt with until the estate has been inspected.
