HC Deb 02 March 1909 vol 1 c1392W
Mr. REES

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he has any official Report, showing that since the introduction of the new Municipal Elections Act in Bengal little interest has been taken in the triennial elections, only an insignificant proportion of the persons entitled to vote appearing at the polls?

Mr. BUCHANAN

The Report shows that in 1907–8 the percentage of voters who went to the polls ranged from 69.6 to 38.4 in the municipalities in which the elections were held in the year. These figures do not compare very unfavourably with similar figures for municipal elections in this country.
