HC Deb 15 March 1999 vol 327 c470W
Mr. Collins

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if the programme to improve sewerage works announced by the Minister for the Environment on 1 March will include repairs to the sewerage system at Windermere in Cumbria. [76667]

Mr. Meale

The English and Welsh water company improvement programmes announced on 1 March include improvement schemes to be carried out at three North West Water sewage treatment works affecting Lake Windermere; at Windermere, Near Sawrey and Ambleside. These schemes will protect and improve the designated bathing water at Windermere and water quality in the River Rothay.

The Environment Agency is currently investigating recent pollution incidents at Lake Windermere in liaison with North West Water and South Lakeland District Council. The Agency will continue monitoring the situation to see whether additional action is necessary.
