To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will list all UK legislation currently in force regarding the health and safety of children and young people at work. [54075]

Mr. Meale

The Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974 and its relevant statutory provisions apply to persons at work and those affected by work activities in Great Britain including children and young people. In particular, the following legislation applies restrictions to protect the health and safety of children and young people at work:

  • The Employment of Women, Young Persons and Children Act 1920;
  • The Health and Safety (Young Persons) Regulations 1997;
  • The Explosives Act 1875 (amended by the Explosives Act 1923);
  • The Carriage of Explosives by Road Regulations 1996;
  • The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1985;
  • The Control of Lead at Work Regulations 1998;
  • The Power Presses Regulations 1965;
  • The Woodworking Machines Regulations 1974;
  • The Agriculture (Circular Saws) Regulations 1959;
  • The Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations 1996;
  • The Agriculture (Avoidance of Accidents to Children) Regulations 1958;
  • The Docks Regulations 1988;

  • The Construction (Lifting Operations) Regulations 1961;
  • The Mines and Quarries Act 1954;
  • The Coal and Other Mines (Sidings) Regulations 1956;
  • The Coal and Other Mines (Locomotives) Regulations 1956;
  • The Quarries (General) Regulations 1956;
  • The Quarries (Ropeways and Vehicles) Regulations 1958;
  • The Quarries Vehicles Regulations 1970;
  • The Quarries (Explosives) Regulations 1988;
  • The Miscellaneous (Mines Explosives) Regulations 1959;
  • The Coal and Other Safety Lamp Mines (Explosives) Regulations 1993; and
  • The Shipbuilding and Ship-repairing Regulations 1960.

Additionally, the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1937, as amended, control conditions and hours that children can work.
