To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the countries that have signed the Stockholm agreement relating to ferry safety; and when the agreement comes into effect. [39392]

Mr. Bowis

As of 23 July 1996, the agreement had been signed by the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The agreement will come into effect on 1 April 1997.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport on what date he expects all the requirements of the Stockholm agreement relating to ferry safety to have been met. [39393]

Mr. Bowis

The requirements of the Stockholm agreement will be implemented on a progressive basis between 1 April 1997 and 1 October 2002, in accordance with the internationally agreed timetable.
