To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what was the average mileage per gallon for new cars bought in Britain(a) in 1975, (b) in 1985 and (c) in 1995. [39841]

The first year when average fuel consumption was calculated was 1978. The figure for 1995 is not yet available, but for 1978, 1985 and 1994, the figures are 30.91, 37.53 and 36.73 miles per gallon respectively.
