To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what research his Department has(a) evaluated and (b) commissioned into the increase in the use of the English language in the EU; and if he will place copies of all such research in the Library. [6331]

The answers are as follows:

  1. (a) None;
  2. (b) None.

However, the British Council-led English 2000 project has initiated research into the use of. and attitudes towards, the teaching and learning of English in the EU and in other parts of the world. The project will carry out in due course more in-depth studies of this issue. The British Council's report "English in the World" will he placed in the Library.
