HC Deb 03 November 1993 vol 231 c279W
33. Mr. Kilfoyle

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had concerning the situation in Cyprus; and if he will make a statement.

36. Mr. McKelvey

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the situation in Cyprus.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs hosted a lunch for the leaders of the two Cypriot communities in Nicosia on 20 October. It provided an opportunity for the leaders to clarify their positions on the set of ideas and confidence-building measures proposed by the UN Secretary-General and for them to discuss ways of moving the process forward. He followed this up when he met the UN Secretary-General in London on 25 October.

Mr. Enright

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he is taking to secure the withdrawal of the occupying Turkish army from Cyprus.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

The United Kingdom supports the call in United Nations Security Council resolution 789 for a reduction in the number of foreign forces stationed in Cyprus. We stand ready, together with other Security Council members, to consider alternative ways to promote the effective implementation of UN resolutions on Cyprus should there be no further progress by the time of the next report to the Security Council by the UN Secretary-General.
