To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what progress is being made with east European countries to join the European Community.

Last June's Copenhagen European Council agreed that the central European associate countries should join the European Community as soon as they are ready to assume the economic and political obligations of membership.

I very much welcome that decision, for which we had lobbied hard. Our task is now to help the associate countries prepare for membership.
