HC Deb 30 March 1993 vol 222 c155W
25. Mr. Oppenheim

To ask the Secretary of State for Education whether he will make a statement on the teaching of Japanese in schools.

Mr. Boswell

The national curriculum requires all secondary school pupils to study at least one of 19 eligible foreign languages up to the age of 16. Japanese is one of these. It is for schools to decide whether to offer Japanese in the light of demand and of the resources available to them.
