Mr. Dowd

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many of all bus, rail and underground journeys within London are made using the travelcard; if he will list all three both in figures and as a percentage; how many of all bus, rail and underground journeys are made by concessionary fares in London and how many of all bus journeys are made using bus passes.

Government policies for road traffic in London are not designed to increase traffic speeds significantly but rather to ease congestion so that traffic moves freely and safely, with more reliable journey times. These policies include the development of priority, red, routes, improved traffic control systems, the use of cameras to monitor speed and red light offences, stricter parking enforcement, and road improvements to remove bottlenecks, facilitate orbital movement and provide access to docklands and east London.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what road improvement and new road building schemes are currently being undertaken in Greater London; what is their cost; and if he will list them.

The following major road improvement schemes on trunk roads for which the Secretary of State is responsible are being undertaken currently in the Greater London area.

A further £9.5 million has been spent during the financial year 1992–93 on a rolling programme of minor trunk roads scheme. Local authorities in London were provided with transport supplementary grant support of £51 million cash grant towards their schemes. Their programme for 1992–93 included the following major schemes. Each scheme has a total cost in excess of £1 million, and grant is 50 per cent. of accepted expenditure.

The following major road improvement schemes on trunk roads for which the Secretary of State is responsible are due to start work in the 1993–94 financial year.

There is further rolling programme of minor trunk road schemes costing about £12 million. In addition, there is a transport supplementary programme of about £150 million of local authority schemes.
