To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many liver transplant operations were conducted in Britain in the last 10 years; and how many such patients died within one year of the operation.

According to information supplied by the United Kingdom transplant service the number of liver transplants performed in NHS hospitals in the United Kingdom since 1982 were:

Information on survival rates is not collected centrally. However a recent study at the Queen Elizabeth hospital, Birmingham indicated that the one-year survival rate had risen from 20 to 30 per cent. before 1980 to a current level of over 60 per cent.
