HC Deb 07 February 1991 vol 185 c214W
Mr. Mans

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average student grant in London.

Mr. Alan Howarth

The information is not available in the form requested.

For the current academic year, the rates of maintenance grant under the Education (Mandatory Awards) Regulations 1990 are £2,845 for students living away from the parental home and studying in London and £1,795 for those at home. Additional allowances may also be payable, but all maintenance payments are means tested. Tuition fees are also payable.

In addition, student loans are now available for most full-time courses of one year or more of a standard higher than A-level but below postgraduate level. The rates for London are:

  1. (a) if the year is the final year of the course, £240 if the student resides at his parents' home, and £340 if he does not; and
  2. (b) if the year is any other year of the course, £330 if the student resides at his parents' home, and £460 if he does not.
