To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when he next expects to meet his counterpart from the German Democratic Republic; and what matters he intends to discuss.

Mr. Lilley

I have no immediate plans to meet my East German counterpart. The Under-Secretary of State for Corporate Affairs, my hon. Friend the Member for Wokingham (Mr. Redwood), visited the German Democratic Republic last month with a group of British business men. He had extensive discussions with GDR Ministers, including those for Economy and Trade, about the effects of unification and the opportunities for British companies.

I hope to meet my French opposite number at an early opportunity to discuss a broad range of issues.
