Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether the Government have received a request from the present Government of Fiji for assistance in drafting a constitution for that country.

Mr. Waldegrave

The Government of Fiji have made such a request. We have agreed to recruit a constitutional expert to provide independent advice to the Government of Fiji.

Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether the Government have made any representations to the Government of Fiji, regarding the drafting of the constitution.

Mr. Waldegrave

We have kept in touch with the Government of Fiji and constantly encouraged them to return Fiji to parliamentary government on the basis of a constitution acceptable to a majority of all sections of the community.
