HC Deb 27 October 1988 vol 139 cc346-7W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will organise and address an all-Wales conference of dairy farmers, the farming unions, consumer organisations, retail dairymen, supermarket and shop owners, medical consultants and general practitioners to receive reports and debate the current field trials of bovine somatotropin in milk production.

Mr. Peter Walker

No.

Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make it his policy to disclose where field trials concerning bovine somatotropin in Wales are taking place; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Walker

No. Section 118 of the Medicines Act 1968 prohibits the disclosure of information supplied by applicants for product licences and test certificates. It is therefore not possible to divulge the location of the trials.

Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on the impact upon the dairy milk quota system of the use of bovine somatotropin in Wales.

Mr. Peter Walker

The overall level of milk production in the EC is controlled by quotas. Bovine somatotropin, which is currently under test in a limited number of field trials, has had no impact on the milk quota system.
