Mr. Ingram

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will list the organisations which have submitted a bid to take over the National Engineering Laboratory, East Kilbride; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Forth

[pursuant to the reply, 25 July 1988, c. 23.]; I can now disclose that bids and proposals were received on 22 July from:

  • The Management of NEL
  • Production Engineering Research Association (PERA)
  • British Maritime Technology Group
  • British Hydro-Mechanics Research Association (BHRA) joint with Strathclyde University
  • YARD (a subsidiary of CAP Group plc)
  • Cranfield Institute of Technology
  • RAPRA Ltd. (a proposal also involving other companies)
  • SGS Moore Barrett and Redwood Limited
  • A partial bid for the Internal Combustion Engines Development Unit of NEL from the staff there.
