To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will publish a table showing the number of employees employed by the British Steel Corporation in(a) Scotland, (b) Wales and (c) England in (i) 1979, (ii) 1982, (iii) 1985 and (iv) June 1988.

[holding answer 25 July 1988]: The following table gives the total number employed by the British Steel Corporation at the end of September for the 1979, 1985 and for 1987, the latest date at which the total was broken down as follows:

The average weekly number of employees in the United Kingdom as a whole was 53,720 during the financial year 1987–88.
