HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 cc310-1W
35. Mr. Michael J. Martin

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the recent steps he has taken to increase employment opportunities in the Glasgow area.

Mr. Lang

Government policies aimed at controlling inflation and stimulating economic growth offer the best prospect for creating permanent new employment opportunities in the Glasgow area. However, a number of Government measures have been aimed specifically at improving the city's infrastructure and stimulating new enterprise and development. These measures include assistance made available through the Scottish Development Agency and its support for local projects such as the Glasgow garden festival, Glasgow opportunities and the east end executive.
