To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what position Scotland held in the United Kingdom in terms of average earnings in 1979; and what position it now occupies.

Information from the new earnings surveys shows Scotland ranking fifth among the United Kingdom standard regions in 1979, and third in 1987.

§ 44. Mr. Riddick
To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the latest average male earnings figures available; and what were the comparable figures in 1986 and 1979.

The following information comes from the Department of Employment's new earnings survey.

Average gross weekly earnings of full-time male employees whose earnings were not affected by absence—Scotland
