To ask the Secretary of State for Home Affairs (1) if he has any plans to amend the Gaming Act 1968 so as to restrict access to amusement arcades or centres to persons over the age of 16 years;

(2) if he has any plans to give local authorities greater controls over the proliferation and operation of amusement arcades and centres;

(3) if he has yet received a report of his research unit on young people's addiction to amusement machines; and if he will make a statement.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects to receive the report on the review of legislation pertaining to amusement machines; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The unit is preparing a report taking account of the results of research which we have now received. The question of legislation is among those which we shall consider when we have completed our assessment of the findings.
