To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will place in the Library the report on in-house maintenance of medical equipment in the National Health Service, compiled by David Fernandez; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 22 February 1988]: I am arranging for a copy of the report to be placed in the Library. The report makes a number of useful recommendations on which action has been proceeding. Some of the recommendations relating to the allocation of responsibilities for equipment management and to the commercial arrangements for maintenance contracts need further examination and in some cases more detailed development of guidelines. Work is continuing under the direction of the director of NHS procurement.
