HC Deb 20 December 1988 vol 144 cc205-6W
71. Mr. Madel

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he is planning to give any advice to local education authorities about arrangements for pupils' homework; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

The Government believe that appropriately set and marked homework valuably reinforces work in the classroom. We would encourage every local education authority to have a policy for homework as part of its policy for the curriculum as a whole. This should state clearly how parents can help their children to get most value out of homework and should offer guidance on the amount and character of homework which should be expected of pupils of different ages and abilities.
