§ Mr. Wrayasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has any plans to seek to make the United Kingdom a party to the Franco-German military agreement; what agreement he has made of the implications of the agreement for (a) the United Kingdom defence policy and (b) the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. MellorThe establishment of a Franco-German defence council, recently announced by President Mitterrand, is an extension of the military co-operation provisions of the Elyseé treaty signed between them in 1963. There are no plans for the United Kingdom to become a party to this treaty. We welcome Franco-German co-operation in the defence field in so far as it contributes to the effectiveness of NATO as a whole.
