HC Deb 21 October 1987 vol 120 cc764-5W
26. Dr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action he has taken to monitor the situation in relation to exiles returning to Chile from the United Kingdom; and what has been the result.

Mr. Eggar

Her Majesty's embassy has approached the Chilean authorities, on humanitarian grounds, to make clear our concerns. Her Majesty's ambassador and his staff in Santiago have been instructed to maintain contact with former exiles and other Chileans who have returned to Chile from the United Kingdom and to monitor their treatment. These arrangements have been welcomed by returning Chileans and by human rights organisations.

47. Mr. Norman Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with his European Economic Community counterparts about the current human rights situation in Chile.

Mr. Eggar

Human rights in Chile are the subject of regular and frequent review within the framework of European political co-operation. The Twelve last issued a statement on the subject on 9 October, the text of which has been deposited in the Library of the House.
