asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have made any representations to support the bid of Cable and Wireless plc to be involved in the provision of international telecommunications facilities in Japan.

Lord Beaverbrook

Her Majesty's Government have made active representations in support of C & W's bid, in the IDC consortium, to provide alternative international telecommunications facilities in Japan. In those representations Her Majesty's Government have stated that this is an important opportunity both for Japan to show that its market is becoming more open and to create an outstanding example of Anglo-Japanese co-operation in a high technology field.

Her Majesty's Government are continuing to follow developments closely.
