How many quangos have been abolished since May 1979, and how many new quangos have been set up during the same period.

Between 1979 and 1986, 816 non-departmental public bodies were abolished, rationalised or substantially reduced. During the same period, 306 new bodies were set up, resulting in a net reduction of 510.
