HC Deb 04 November 1986 vol 103 cc414-5W
Mr. Gareth Wardell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish in the Official Report the sums of money that his Department has allocated for the refurbishment of the British Iron and Steel Federation houses that are privately owned in Wales during each of the past five years.

Mr. Mark Robinson

Allocations have not been made for this purpose. A recent report by the Building Research Establishment found that the majority of BI SF houses are structurally sound.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish in the Official Report the sums of money allocated by his Department to each local authority in Wales for the improvement of council-owned British Iron and Steel Federation houses during each of the past five years.

Mr. Mark Robinson

No specific allocations have been made for this purpose. Local authorities are free to decide their own expenditure priorities within the total allocations made available to them.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if his Department has any plans to make grants available for the removal of asbestos in privately owned British Iron and Steel Federation houses.

Mr. Mark Robinson

Asbestos is generally present in BISF homes only as a small proportion of the composition of the roof material. These roofs are not considered to constitute a hazard and there are no plans for specific grants to be made available.
