asked the Secretary of State for the Home. Department what is the function of the public sector corruption index; how it operates; and if he will make a statement.

The public sector corruption index was set up in 1978 in response to a recommendation of the Royal Commission on standards of conduct in public life. The index is operated by staff of the Metropolitan police within the Metropolitan and City police company fraud department. It is provided as a common police service to forces to co-ordinate and supply information nationally on matters of corruption in the public sector.
