HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 c537W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when the Metropolitan and City fraud branch was established; and what has been its joint establishment size, by rank.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The Metropolitan and City police company fraud department was set up in 1946 with an establishment of three officers. The present establishment (excluding the City cheque squad, which is not engaged on company fraud work) is 219. The Commissioners of the Metropolitan and the City of London police consider that to give a breakdown of the establishment by rank could impair the department's operational effectiveness.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what has been the budget for the Metropolitan and City fraud branch for each year since 1979 under the following headings (a) uniformed and civilian staff, (b) administrative costs, (c) publicity and (d) central establishment costs and incidental costs incurred during investigations;

(2) what proportion of the total cost of the Metropolitan and City fraud branch is met by the Metropolitan and City police forces, respectively.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I will write to the hon. Member.
