HC Deb 04 February 1986 vol 91 c129W
Mr. Merchant

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what humanitarian aid is being given to refugees from the Afghan war.

Mr. Raison

In 1985 we contributed some £5.3 million to assist refugees from the Afghan war in response to special appeals from international and British voluntary agencies. In addition, the European Community agreed to provide food aid worth about £7 million from the 1985 programme for delivery in 1986; Britain's share of the Community action was some £1.4 million.

The level of assistance to be provided in 1986 is still under consideration although we have already contributed £4,000 through the Save the Children Fund.
