§ Mr. Burtasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make representations to the Soviet authorities about the level and intensity of jamming of BBC external services broadcasts and other interference including the Russian service and world service.
§ Mr. RentonThe Soviet authorities are well aware of our strong feelings about the continued jamming of BBC services in the Soviet Union and elsewhere, which contravenes the spirit and letter of the Helsinki final act as well as article 35 of the Convention of the International Telecommunication Union of which the Soviet Union is a signatory. We continue to take suitable opportunities to remind them of their commitments under these agreements, most recently at the Anglo-Soviet cultural talks in March.
