asked the Attorney-General how many additional stipendiary magistrates have been appointed since the start of the miners' dispute.

Thirty additional stipendaries have been appointed by the Lord Chancellor to sit between 3 September and 1 March to try cases resulting from the miners' dispute at Birkenhead, Chesterfield, Doncaster, Peterlee, Seaham, Mansfield, Nottingham, Pontefract, Rotherham, St. Helens and Scunthorpe. The sittings have been continuous at Chesterfield and Rotherham; elsewhere they have been occasional or intermittent. The amount of time sat by individual stipendaries ranges from eight weeks to one day.
