§ Mr. Meacherasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will provide an up-to-date estimate of the cost of the married man's tax allowance in 1984–85; and if he wll indicate the amount which represents the cost of the difference between the married man's and single person's allowance.
§ Mr. Moore[pursuant to his reply, 25 October 1984, c. 679]: The cost of the married man's allowance and the married age allowance is estimated to be about £11.8 billion in 1984–85, of which £4.1 billion represents the cost of the excess of the married man's allowance and the married age allowance over the corresponding single person's allowances. These estimates do not cover persons who are not on Inland Revenue records because their incomes are below tax thresholds.
