asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in the light of increased mortgage interest rates, he will provide the latest estimate of the cost of mortgage interest tax relief in 1984–85 and for the preceding five years.

[pursuant to his reply, 25 October 1984, c. 679]: The latest estimates, which take into account the levels of mortgage debt as well as mortgage interest rates, are as follows:
