asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many women gave birth while on remand in custody awaiting trial or sentence in 1983 and so far in 1984; what was the offence with which each one was charged; and what was the sentence.

Fourteen unsentenced women gave birth whilst in custody between 1 January 1983 and 7 November 1984. Of the 13 for whom information about the outcome of court proceedings is available, the following table sets out the main offence for which each was charged and the outcome.
