HC Deb 21 May 1984 vol 60 cc328-9W
Mr. Colin Shepherd

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) if he will seek an injunction under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949 against Sunshine radio, presently transmitting in Shropshire, and those operating Sunshine radio;

(2) what steps he is taking to prevent the continued operation of the private radio station identifying itself as Sunshine radio, despite successful prosecutions.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

We are currently reviewing the effectiveness of our action against unlicensed broadcasters and the possibility of injunctions and other measures against the operators of particular stations is being considered.

Mr. Colin Shepherd

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many prosecutions have been brought against people operating a pirate radio station identifying itself as Sunshine radio and broadcasting over Shropshire; when these were brought; against whom they were brought; and what were the outcomes.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

There have been two. On 8 December 1983, Mr. Graham Symonds was convicted and fined £450 with £100 costs; the court ordered forfeiture of the transmitter. On 26 April this year Mr. Barrie Massey was convicted and fined £500 with £80 costs; the court ordered forfeiture of the transmitter and aerial.
